It brings me, and undoubtedly everyone else involved with the rescue, a great deal of joy to hear happy endings’ updates with one of the rescue horses. I received an email from Dorie and Briley, proud owners of a QH mare named Sugar whom they adopted in December 2005. Although considered a “senior horse,” this wonderful mare has turned out to be quite the champion for one delighted young girl! I was particularly fond of Sugar in her time at our barn and it was a bittersweet moment when she was adopted. She was really my introduction to PHH rescue and I was somewhat “christened” as a volunteer working with her. Here is a glimpse of her new life:
“Briley has been riding Sugar with Boots n Buckles 4H in Sedro Woolley for a year. The pictures are from the Skagit county fair last August. She had a rough time in the fit and show, Sugar was a little antsy about the cattle nearby for the rodeo. She had acted up a bit last spring at the Whatcom County youth fair when they were sharing an arena with the kids doing dairy cattle.
When we got Sugar she was so funny because she ‘penned’ our goat and stood there looking at us like, “you silly people, don’t you know what to do now?”
At the Skagit Co fair, Briley got all the ribbons you see in the picture. She was especially pleased with Sugars Reserve Grand Champion placing in the trail which was her toughest event! That is the one with the rubber chicken . . . Briley and Sugar rode all the pleasure events.
They have had one schooling show this year and Briley’s sister 5 yo Joetta got her first blue in the lead line. The kids love Sugar. She is our sweet old faithful and our family will never be the same!
She now has three companions. A goat named Stanley, A pinto rescue named Meghan and a handsome young paint that ain’t named Skip.”
